Nearly Half of American Adults Use AI But Few Pay for It: Subscription models may not be enough of a lure.
Oct. 6, 2026 by Natalie Lung
….a new report from venture firm Andreessen Horowitz shows that most consumers aren’t willing to pay for AI services, raising questions about the sustainability of giant AI investments ahead of planned IPOs.
Although nearly half of US adults surveyed over the summer use AI chatbots, only 4.5% of consumers in the country had a paid personal subscription to ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude, according to an analysis of YipitData receipts by VC firm Andreessen Horowitz. And that spending is remarkably concentrated: The top 1% of payers account for 19.5% of overall consumer AI spending, shelling out $903 a month on average. The median payer spent just $25 a month.
….they need to prove that they can make money not just from AI power users, but from everyone else.

AI Versus Everything Else: The hyperscaler boom is crowding out other investment
Oct. 6, 2026 by Paul Krugman
Until now, discussions of the potential economic problems created by the AI boom have mostly focused on the future. Will it destroy millions of jobs? Is there a bubble and will it cause a severe recession if it bursts? Will it destroy humanity? While these are doubtless very important questions, attempts to answer them are at best educated guesses.
We don’t have to guess, however, about one major effect of the AI boom, because it’s happening right now: Massive spending on data centers is crowding out investment in everything else in the economy.

For Billionaires, AI Wealth Is Different This Time: AI brings a staggering new peak in wealth – and signs we just passed it
Oct. 5, 2026 by Kristine Owram
The boom in AI valuations has created unprecedented wealth for founders, early-stage investors and employees lucky enough to get stock options.
Even among the very richest people in the world, the divergence between the AI haves and the everyone-else-have-nots is stark. Tech billionaires account for all of the $845 billion in wealth gains on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index so far this year, while those who made their fortunes outside technology lost a combined $62 billion.
And being a tech billionaire increasingly means being an AI billionaire.

AI Experts Largely Agree on Which Policies Most Reduce Catastrophic AI Risk
Oct. 5, 2026
Over the last few months, AI risk has burst into the public and political consciousness in a big way. A combination of real cyber incidents, high-profile resignations, and statements from lab leaders has brought the discussion of catastrophic risk to a level of prominence that just a year ago seemed highly improbable.
While there are plenty of catastrophic risk estimates out there (including from our forecasters) ….Forecasters believe that policy really can reduce risks from AI, but are pessimistic that governments will put in place the policies that have the highest impact…

Technology and artificial intelligence

OpenAI announced that it notified over 100 organizations about incidents in which its AIs went rogue and either attacked or otherwise caused harm to the organizations. Forecasters think there’s a 56% (20% to 80%) chance that we will hear of another case of a Western frontier AI company (OpenAI, Anthropic, GDM, SpaceXAI) having paused inference because of safety concerns with a model before 2027. Forecasters generally disagree about this prospect…

California issues investigative subpoena to OpenAI over rogue agents’ hacking
Oct. 1, 2026
California’s attorney general [Rob Bonta] has issued an investigative subpoena to OpenAI, starting an investigation into the startup as part of a broader inquiry into potential cybersecurity vulnerabilities and incidents related to its AI models, his office said on Thursday.
Last month… Bonta announced that the Department of Justice was conducting a formal investigation into the “Hugging Face incident”, amid increasing scrutiny of the AI industry. AI agents developed by OpenAI hacked Hugging Face in July, gaining access to parts of the open-source platform’s infrastructure.

Google thinks SpaceX’s Starship has to launch 1,800 times before space data centers get off the ground
Oct. 1, 2026 byTim Fernholz
Google’s prototype of its orbital compute satellite took off today onboard a SpaceX rocket launched from California — the first time the tech giant has sent one of its advanced chips into space ….
Elon Musk’s rocket builders have achieved a price-reducing “learning curve” of about 20% a year ….it’s reasonable to expect the company to deliver launch prices close to $200 per kilogram by 2035.….a similar cost-reduction trajectory will require Starship to fly 370,000 tons of payload into orbit. That’s something that would take it about 1,800 launches over the next 10 years, or 180 a year

Here’s the Email You Get When an OpenAI Model Hacks Your Organization: OpenAI will wish you the “best” after hacking into your company.
Sept. 30, 2026 by Frank Landymore
Companies and organizations around the world would do well to accept what their new roles are in our current AI-driven paradigm: glorified target practice for rogue AI agents.
The latest of such cybersecurity incidents, which frontier AI labs have been happy to turn into public spectacles, comes from OpenAI. On Tuesday, the ChatGPT-maker apologized after its AI agents hacked their way into several Australian government websites. The most alarming of these cases, which took place in June, involved the autonomous AI systems accessing a database for Medicare, the country’s universal health insurance scheme.

Nvidia releases software platform to stop AI agents from misbehaving
Sept. 28, 2026 by Kif Leswing
The release on Monday of Nvidia’s Open Agent Safety Platform comes after companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and Google disclosed recent incidents in which their artificial intelligence models escaped their sandboxes and attempted to hack other companies and access their computer systems.
An Nvidia representative told reporters on a call on Sunday that its platform could have prevented OpenAI’s Hugging Face incident in July.
