Nvidia has been in talks with OpenAI to provide a roughly $250 billion backstop for a data-center project, The Wall Street Journal reported last month. And Meta Platforms just partnered with BlackRock for an off-balance-sheet financing for a new data center in Texas.

He apologized for “diluting myself in this way and harming the thing that we have all built together” and said that his interactions with LLMs had become “not healthy for me or good for the world.”

AI Model Invents Completely New Viruses Unknown to Nature: What could possibly go wrong?

In case you weren’t already feeling paranoid about how AI is shaping our future, scientists for the first time have used an AI model to create new and viable viruses that have never been seen in nature.
Before you panic, the work, detailed in a study published in the journal Science, involved creating viruses that only target bacteria and are harmless to humans. Bacteriophages, as they’re called, are an important medical intervention for targeting drug-resistant pathogens.
“This is an important milestone,” Patrick Cai, a synthetic biologist at the University of Manchester who was not involved in the study, told The New York Times.

Jealously Watching OpenAI and Anthropic, Meta Suddenly Claims That Its AI Went on a Hacking Spree Too. A likely story.
Last month, OpenAI revealed that a group of its AI models had broken containment, hacking into the systems of open source AI platform Hugging Face.
On one hand, experts saw the incident as the latest warning sign that AI models had gotten to the point of being able to autonomously infiltrate targets… On the other, a more skeptical read of the situation is that OpenAI could have orchestrated the hack as part of a “publicity stunt” …. knowing the publicity would be invaluable. After all, just three months earlier, competitor Anthropic had made major headlines by announcing that its own Mythos AI model had similarly broken containment.…
Now the situation has gotten even stranger as a third company, Meta, has entered the fray. As the Wall Street Journal reports, the Mark Zuckerberg-led tech giant is claiming that during a recent test of one of its AI model conducted by an independent company, the AI accessed the internet and hacked a third-party service — an narrative that’s starting to get awfully familiar at this point.

Earlier this year, we published a major investigation into the DIY chatbot apps cashing in on users’ desire for intimacy. Chief among them was Seewa AI…Seewa’s claims about privacy were badly misleading. It told users that “all conversations are encrypted”…. Last week, it was revealed that hundreds of conversations people had carried out with Anthropic’s Claude chatbot had been made available online and could be found in public searches. And last year, hundreds of thousands of chat logs on Grok conversations were also made publicly available.

The AI Bailout Could Be Baked Into the AI Bubble

Private credit companies are key owners of AI-related assets. Many of their parent private equity firms own life insurers that are dumping grounds for bad loans—and subject to state bailouts.
A hedge fund worth $45 billion at its height sold nearly its entire stock portfolio to Citadel Securities last week. As recently as a month ago, the fund was up 439 percent on the year, according to an investor letter from its founder, 24-year-old former OpenAI employee Leopold Aschenbrenner. But its portfolio, aggressively invested in companies tied to the artificial intelligence industry, dropped 67 percent in July.
The problem is that the industry is bound so tightly with the stock market that a change in feeling from AI investors could be all it takes to generate a market-wide cras.h.. if AI is propping up the economy, who is propping up AI?
The answer… could be the U.S. taxpayer.

Judge denies xAI’s request to block Minnesota ban on ‘nudify’ apps

Despite a lawsuit from xAI, a Minnesota ban on apps that allow users to “nudify” images can move forward, according to NBC News.
U.S. District Judge Donovan Frank’s ruling focused as much on the timing of xAI’s lawsuit as on the substance of the law itself. Frank wrote that xAI filed its request for a temporary restraining order “on July 29, 2026, nearly three months after the law was signed, and only three days before the law is set to take effect” on August 1.
